Zinc concentrations in mixed saliva, parotid saliva, salivary sediment, and salivary supernatant have all been investigated, but their use as biomarkers of zinc status is equivocal(Greger and Sickles, 1979; Freeland-Graves et al., 1981; Baer and King, 1984). As well, although the collection of saliva samples is quick and relatively noninvasive, the rate of flow and stimulation of saliva is difficult to control, and diurnal variation in zinc levels may occur (Warren et al., 1981). In view of these problems, and the contradictory results observed, the use of salivary zinc as a biomarker of zinc status has been abandoned.
