Nature lovers deplore the deforestation of virgin wilderness. Battles have raged over the logging of “natural habitats” of this or that “endangered species.” Scientists have voiced concern over the relationship between forestation practices and global warming. It has even been asserted that trees cause pollution.
Are forests important to us for more than beauty and commerce? Is there indeed a wholeness in nature, between plants (including trees) on the one hand, and animals (including humans) on the other?
We are told that the ultimate source of all life-sustaining energy is the sun. Yet we humans cannot get our energy from just sitting in the sun. We must get it from our food. But how does it get into the food?
The answers to these questions involve an understanding of the wondrous interdependence of animals and plants. Each of us thrives on what the other produces—as if we were made for each other.
Lying on the beach on a summer day, we can feel the warmth of the sun. But we may not be aware of how much more the sun provides for our bodies. When we stroll over to the hot dog stand, do we think about how the energy for the stroll, as well as the calories in the hot dog came originally from the sun? We—and all other forms of earthly life—are intimately and ultimately dependent on the sun.
In this chapter, we look at how the sun gives birth to our food by a process called photosynthesis, and then we look at carbohydrate, the most abundant energy-providing nutrient in the world.
