The unborn child is, of course, completely dependent on a single person—the mother-to-be—not only for the nutrients needed for normal growth and development, but also for a safe haven from toxic substances like alcohol. After birth, the mother who exclusively breastfeeds her child extends her pregnancy role of being wholly responsible for her child’s nutrition.
