    After completing this chapter, readers (learners) will be able to

    1. Define health (in particular, the WHO definition) and discuss what is meant by the terms "public health," "community health," and "population health."
    2. Differentiate between the roles of public health and medicine.
    3. Differentiate between a focus on personal health and a focus on public health.
    4. List and discuss factors that influence a community's health.
    5. Define the terms "risk factor" and "protective factor" and give examples of each.
    6. Draw the ecological model, describe each of the 4 levels, and relate it to factors that commonly affect health.
    7. Discuss how public health has evolved over time to focus on evolving threats to health, using both science and community action.
    8. Describe some key phases in the history of public health, and how the primary focus of public health institutions changed in each phase.
    9. Describe the purpose and goals of the Healthy People 2030 project as a plan for the nation's health.
