- Explain what a governmental health organization is and give an examples at the following levels: international, national, state and local.
- Describe the decentralized structure of public health in the United States, including some pros and cons of decentralization.
- Explain in basic terms the role of the World Health Organization (WHO).
- Give examples of agencies and functions within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), prior to 2025 and after the 2025 reorganization.
- Discuss criteria that should be used to evaluate the impact of a major reorganization of public health systems in 2025.
- Discuss examples of how state and local health departments work together to tackle major health threats.
- Describe the three core functions of public health (assessment, policy development and assurance) and give examples of each.
- Recognize the 10 essential public health services and discuss their relationship to the three core functions.
- Discuss the contributions of both governmental and non-governmental public health organizations to the health and well-being of the public.
- Examine factors that influence the effectiveness of public health organizations.
- Explain the importance of collective responsibility and public policy to public health -- and how that is sometimes in tension with other values, like individual responsibility or individual rights.
- Discuss various viewpoints on the public health impacts of the reorganization of federal public health agencies and funding under the Trump Administration.
