This first episode highlights key responsibilities of public health agencies at the local level, as well as actions of the CDC and of research institutions, during a pandemic. I think it will help you to understand assessment, policy development, and assurance better -- and more importantly, give a vivid picture of how public health agencies work for the public.
As you watch the episode below (streaming free from PBS, the Public Broadcasting Service), please consider the following questions:
- How does the information in this episode affirm or contradict the information in the first two chapters of this book?
- Why is public health infrastructure described as an "invisible shield"?
- What were some of the challenges that public health organizations experienced with assessment (detecting, measuring, and understanding a threat to health) -- either in the covid epidemic or another example?
- What examples did you see of public health organizations influencing policies to inform, mobilize, or protect communities during a disease outbreak?
- How did public health organizations adjust or change their approach to disease over time?
- What role does public trust play in effective public health measures?
- How are some of the themes in this documentary showing up in public policy about health today?
