Access to clean water and the question of how to dispose of sewage were among the first priorities of public health. Even today, in much of the world, these are the fundamental health problems that need to be addressed, to stop the spread of disease.
The modern environmental movement in the U.S. really kicked off in 1962 with the publication of Silent Spring, by Rachel Carson, a book that showed how pesticides were affecting the health of birds and were moving through our food supply and into our own bodies. Environmental health professionals joined with others - chemists, biologists, activists, farmers - to demand safety standards for pesticides and other chemicals in our environment.
Today, however, while there is regulation of SOME chemicals in our environment (usually through EPA, USDA or the FDA), thousands more chemicals are put into consumer products, agricultural products and industrial uses than could ever be tested for risks to human health. Often, a dangerous chemical does not start to be regulated until after it has caused some notable harm.
