    Whenever chronic diseases are discussed a common theme has been the need for good nutrition and physical activity. Activity and food also play a role in maintaining good mental health, coping with stress, and promoting good immune function. There is some truth to the saying that you are what you eat!

    1. Define and discuss the terminology such as "overweight," "obese," and "Body Mass Index" that are commonly used in discussing the impact of body fat on health.
    2. Summarize and critique some of the arguments used on both sides of the "obesity debate," the scientific disagreement about the health impacts of increased size.
    3. Formulate an informed opinion regarding the "obesity debate."
    4. Describe some of the elements of good nutrition, on both personal and community levels.
    5. Define "physical activity" and specific benefits of adequate physical activity.
    6. Describe public health strategies for increasing access to good nutrition and physical activity through community-level changes.

    Several optional readings are linked throughout this chapter, as I know this topic is of interest to a lot of you.
