Results for Diffusion of a Dye through an Agar Gel

Table 1. Diffusion of dye crystals through an agar gel.
Time (min) Diffusion of methylene blue (mm) Diffusion of potassium permanganate (mm)
    10
    20
    30
    1. Which dye diffused more rapidly?

    2. What is the relationship BETWEEN molecular WEIGHT and rate of molecular MOVEMENT (aka diffusion)?

    3. What caused the dye molecules to move into the gel? (IT IS NOT WATER!!)

    Results for Osmosis Experiment

Table 2. Measuring osmosis via changes in weight
      0 min 10 min 20 min 30 min
Initial Weight Total Weight Change in Weight Total Weight Change in Weight Total weight Change in Weight
    Bag A
    Bag B
    Bag C
    Bag D
    1. Did water move across the membrane in all bags containing solutions of sugar? What is it called when water moves across a semi-permeable membrane?

    2. A water concentration gradient must be present in cells for osmosis to occur. Which bag(s) represented the highest concentration gradient relative to its surrounding environment?

    3. The highest gradient should result in the highest rate of diffusion. Examine the data in the table during the 10- and 20-min intervals. Did the greatest changes in weight occur in bags with the highest concentration gradients? Why or why not?

    4. If the experiment was allowed to proceed for longer, eventually the curves on the line graph for bags C and D would become horizontal. What does it mean about the concentration of the solution and the concentration of the bags when the curves for bags C and D become horizontal?
