Introduction
Human health is influenced not only by biology but also by the quality of our relationships and daily choices. This chapter explores the connections between emotional intimacy, sexual health, and the body’s immune defenses. Students will learn how healthy relationships and responsible sexual decision-making contribute to overall wellness and how the immune system protects the body from harmful pathogens. The chapter also examines sexually transmitted infections (STIs), methods of prevention, and the importance of informed, evidence-based health behaviors in reducing disease risk. By understanding the links between relationships, immunity, and disease prevention, readers can make informed decisions that support lifelong health and well-being.
- Compare signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships
- Define the many types of loving relationships.
- Employ effective communication techniques.
- Describe the difference between sex, gender, and sexuality
- Identify the major maternal and newborn complications associated with untreated sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and recommend appropriate prevention and treatment strategies for managing STIs during pregnancy.
- Describe how infectious diseases spread through the chain of infection and analyze how public health measures and vaccinations help break this chain and promote long-term immunity.
- Choose the best type of contraceptive method based on effectiveness against unintended pregnancy and STD transmission.
- 12.1: Relationships
- Social wellness involves building meaningful relationships, connecting with others, and contributing to your community. Strong social connections not only enhance well-being but also reduce the risk of disease and early death, offering health benefits comparable to quitting smoking.
- 12.2: Pregnancy, Contraception and Abortion
- Pregnancy begins with fertilization, and abortion has long been part of reproductive healthcare for unintended pregnancies. Since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022, abortion access now varies by state, affecting health outcomes and posing challenges for those with limited resources.
- 12.3: Sex, Gender, and Sexuality
- Sex and gender are distinct concepts: sex refers to biological traits along a spectrum from male to female, while gender relates to social and cultural roles. They do not always align, highlighting the complexity of identity.
- 12.4: The Immune System
- Earth hosts an enormous number of microorganisms, some harmful and others beneficial. The immune system defends against these threats through its innate and adaptive responses, using white blood cells and lymph tissues to detect and destroy invaders, though some pathogens still cause infection.
- 12.5: Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and Diseases (STDs)
- For the first time in nearly 20 years, U.S. STI rates have slightly declined, down 1.8% from 2022 to 2023, driven by fewer gonorrhea cases. While chlamydia remains steady and syphilis increases have slowed, over 2.4 million cases were still reported in 2023. Despite progress, STIs continue to disproportionately affect young adults, Black communities, and gay and bisexual men, emphasizing the need for prevention, testing, and equitable care.
- 12.6: What is the Incidence, Prevalence, and Cost of STIs?
- Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a major public health concern in the United States, affecting millions each year. Understanding how common these infections are (prevalence), how many new cases occur annually (incidence), and their economic impact helps highlight the importance of prevention, testing, and treatment to protect both individual and community health.
- 12.7: Pregnancy and STIs
- Sexually transmitted infections during pregnancy can pose serious risks to both mother and baby, including miscarriage, premature birth, and birth defects. Many of these complications can be prevented through early testing, treatment, and prenatal care. Routine STI screening helps protect maternal health and ensures the safest possible outcome for the newborn.
- 12.8: Common Types of STIs
- A concise, practical guide to common STIs, how they spread, what symptoms look like (often none), and how they’re tested and treated. It distinguishes curable infections (chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, trichomoniasis) from lifelong but manageable viruses (HIV, herpes, HPV), outlines risks like PID, infertility, cancer, and pregnancy harms, and emphasizes prevention through safer sex, vaccination, regular screening, and partner treatment.
- 12.9: Comprehension Check
- Chapter 12 summary and test your understanding
- 12.10: Glossary
- Glossary terms for Chapter 12
- 12.11: References
- References for Chapter 12
