Medicaid is funded by both states and the federal government, but administered by states, so each state can decide how to extend coverage to its citizens. There is also a healthcare coverage program for children called the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which covers eligible children whose families earn too much money to qualify for Medicaid but who are not covered under a private insurance plan (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, 2023, Seabert et al., 2021).
