    Part C. Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE)

     
    Activity Factor Table- Five rows with varying levels of activity per day- ranging from sedentary to extremely active from top to bottom. The columns include amount of exercise, description, and the multiplication factor for the BMR.  1.2 times BMR for sedentary and 1.9 for very active.


    Your BMR/RMR is only one part of your total daily energy expenditure. Experts have developed the activity factor- to estimate the TDEE for an individual based on their estimated activity level on a daily basis. In general, adult woman who are lightly to moderately active burn about 2000 kcal/day, and men come in at about 2500 kcal/day. This varies dramatically with the size and activity of the individual. Young (16-26 yr), larger active males may burn 4000 kcal/d and females about 3500 kcal/day.

    Use the RMR values you got for parts A1 and A2 and multiply by the activity factor in the table below. Compare it the value in part A5. You will have to judge where you fit in with your activity levels- be honest.

    1. Institute of Medicine (IOM) TDEE formula (2005) (see link below)- with height and weight and PAL will estimate you total daily energy expenditure. Use the formula best suited for you or simply use the calculator provided in the links below to estimate TDEE which they call EER.

    EER- Estimated Energy Requirement is the same as the total daily energy expenditure (TDEE). It uses physical activity levels (PAL) with- sedentary is 1.0-1.39, low active 1.4-1.59, active 1.6-1.89, and highly active- 1.9-2.5. It uses 0, 2.2, 7.3, and 16.7 miles of walking per day for each category, respectively.

    Males >19 yrs- EER = 662 - (9.53 * Age[yr]) + PA * ((15.91 * Weight[kg]) + (539.6 * Height[m]))

    Females >19 yrs- EER = 354 - (6.91 * Age[yr]) + PA * ((9.36 * Weight[kg]) + (726 * Height[m]))

    Many calculators are available for the Institute of Medicine formula. The PA factor is multiplied by the sum of the weight and height factors combined.
