    Part A- Vegetarianism -Good or Bad- for you and the environment

    As mentioned in the beginning of this manual, there is a strong relationship between metabolism, body composition, and nutrition. The old adage that a calorie is a calorie is true thermodynamically, but not metabolically. The different types of foods we eat not only provide us with vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, but they also have phytochemicals in them. These plant chemicals not only provide protection and critical functions to plants, but they serve and protect us as well.

    The phytochemicals are highest in colorful foods because the phytochemicals impart color quite often and even smell in some cases. What you eat has a significant effect on how you physically and mentally "perform" as well as your metabolism. The last statement is likely not a "news flash", but did you know- what you eat also has a very significant impact on the environment?! Many people are leaning toward what is called a “plant-based diet” versus a vegetarian diet. They claim they have more energy and feel healthier. Others have claimed they felt weak and lacked energy. There is no right answer or right diet but there likely is a right food for you. There are some good guidelines if you want to stay healthy, but change is difficult for many and sometimes finding good organically grown food can be expensive and hard to find.

    Some of the statistics in this documentary are stunning. But remember, they are meant to be. In other words, documentaries by their very nature are one-sided and can "slant" things in very ingenious ways. Here is the trailer to the documentary.

    I want you to see the movie and write down at least 4 points you got out of it that you may have not known, or it confirmed your thinking. It is a long but very entertaining documentary on Netflix (The Game Changers). If you don't have Netflix, then don't worry you can find it on YouTube (link provided).

    After you seen the movie, watch this "counterpoint" or analysis and then say how it influenced your thinking or thoughts on your 4 points. Again, remember there is no right or wrong answers on this. Just your perspective! Please consider both sides of the issue- as a true scientist should!

    I personally think going modified vegan would be great for our health and sustainable future. However, I like the flavor and texture of meat (Umami/ savory) and like the protein quality I get from it. Again, please comment on another's thread and this is fine. Again, it needs to be substantial.
