    1. Balance

    Balance can be assessed many ways. We have both dynamic and static balance, and each requires a unique test. The ability to keep your center of mass over your base of support is the critical factor in balance. People can increase their balance by 1) spreading the center of mass over a wider area, by spreading their arms, 2) lowering their center of mass, which brings it closer to the base of support, or by 3) widening the base of support. A sports car that can take turns very fast have a wide base of support, a low center of gravity and are well balanced throughout the car to enable this feat.

    Three main system contribute toward equilibrium or our ability to stay upright.

    1. Vision

    2. Proprioception- limb position and pressure awareness

    3. Vestibular system- Inner ear

    By taking away vision or increasing the difficulty for balance we rely on other systems to a larger degree. Reducing our base of support or making things dynamic also decreases the ability to stay balanced. You need to do 4 different stances for 10 seconds- twice each, with eyes open and closed.

    Prior to starting- Make sure you are barefoot or sock-footed, and on a hard floor- not carpet.
