    Worksheet for Rockport Walk Test- Heart Rate and Aerobic Capacity Comparisons

    For any given exercise, unless it at maximum, you are operating at some percentage of maximum and this is how exercise physiologists gauge intensity- % maxHR or % VO2max. We will be figuring out both in this section. First- calculate all things in parenthesis like- age, weight, time and heart rate- then take 139.168 subtract age factor, weight factor, time factor and HR factor- males add- 6.318 or start with 145.486

    To get your HR max and Heart Rate Reserve

    · Say you had 110 heart rate at the end of the walk and you are 30 years old.

    · 208- (30 x 0.7)= 208-21= 187 estimated max.

    · If your resting heart is 70, we now subtract maximum from resting to get 100% HRR

    · So HRR is- 187- 70= 117 bpm

    We will be making the following 3 comparisons in this lab after you have found out: 1) the heart rate you finished at, 2) your predicted maximum (Tanaka et al), 3) your VO2 for the walk, and 4) your predicted maximum VO2- Rockport formula number.

    I. First we will compare the heart rate %max to VO2%max

    A. Figure out the % of maximum heart rate you did the walk in- Divide 1 by 2

    B. Figure out the % of maximum VO2 you did the walk in- Divide 3 by 4

    C. Compare A (above) to B (above)

    II. Now we are going to compare heart rate reserve (HRR)% to VO2 max %.

    A. Use (Ex HR-RHR)/(Max HR-RHR) to get HRR%

    B. Use the same number in I-B- for the %VO2max

    C. Come up with the %s and compare them- closer or farther than I?

    To get your %HRR for the walk or any exercise- (ExHR- RHR)/ HRR

    · You then need to subtract the resting from your exercise heart rate (ExHR)

    · (ExHR) 110- (RHR)70= 40, then divide 40 by the HRR or 117= 40/117= 34%

    III. Now we are going to compare the HRR% to the VO2 reserve.

    · Baseline is 3.5 so Max-3.5= VO2 reserve

    · Compare this to what you got in II. Is it closer or farther than the other two?

    In Summary-

    A. Use the Tanaka formula to get your heart rate max (HRmax).

    B. Take your (exercise HR minus resting) and divide that by( HRmax- resting) to get %HRR

    C. Calculate your walking VO2

    D. Calculate your estimate VO2max from the Rockport Mile Walk Test formula

    E. Divide C by D to get %of VO2max

    F. Take your Walk VO2 and subtract 3.5 then divide Rockport VO2 and -3.5 to get VO2 reserve %

    G. Compare the HRR% to the VO2 reserve %
