    It is often necessary to estimate the probability of the outcome of an event in order to make an evidence-based decision. Public health officials study epidemiological data to estimate the likelihood of a disease outbreak. Kinesiologists assess the probability of an athlete sustaining an injury based on their biomechanics and training load. Clinicians choose treatments for various conditions based on the probability of positive health outcomes found in clinical trials. Nutritionists may recommend specific dietary interventions based on the probability that those changes will lower a patient’s risk of chronic disease. You may have even chosen your current course of study based on the growing availability of jobs in the healthcare sector.

    You have, more than likely, used probability throughout your life. In fact, you probably have an intuitive sense of probability. Probability deals with the chance of an event occurring. Whenever you weigh the health risks and benefits of a behavior, such as choosing to exercise versus remaining sedentary, you are using probability. In this chapter, you will learn how to solve probability problems using a systematic approach relevant to the health sciences.
