    Learning Objectives
    1. Identify general principles used to select a healthy food plan, including balance, variety, moderation, and adequacy in nutrients and Calories.
    2. State by name: DRI, RDA, AI, UL, and AMDR.
    3. Compare and contrast the purpose of the DRI, RDA, AI, UL, and AMDR in planning healthy meals and interpreting food labels.
    4. Compare My Plate and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans as they relate to selecting healthy food choices.
    5. Practice using nutrient food labels and nutrient fact panels to support selection of healthy foods.
    6. Define requirements for foods to be labeled "organic" or "natural."

    In this chapter, you will learn about the tools and guidelines for achieving a healthy diet. There are several dietary reference intake values that can be used to plan and assess the nutrient intake for a person given their age, weight, gender and activity level. The intake values help define dietary guidelines and tools like My Plate help create a customized set of recommendations for a person who wants to achieve a healthy diet. Finally, you will learn about food labels and nutrient fact panels to help you select healthy foods.
