    Learning Objectives
    1. Explain the function of the digestive system.
    2. Compare the roles of the gastrointestinal tract and accessory organs in the digestion process.
    3. Explain the difference between mechanical and chemical digestion.
    4. Describe the role of each organ involved in the digestion process.
    5. Explain how the circulatory system, central nervous system, muscular system, endocrine system, and immune system can affect the nutrition process.
    6. Relate the process of digestion to metabolism and provide examples of enzymes involved in digestion.
    7. Compare and contrast anabolism and catabolism.
    8. Describe a chronic disease or injury that affects each step of the digestion process.
    9. Justify dietary recommendations for chronic conditions, such as celiac disease and GERD.
    10. Compare and contrast food intolerance and food allergy.

    We will begin our deeper dive into the macronutrients and micronutrients with a chapter on the basics of digestion. This chapter will prepare you to better understand the process of breaking down our food and building new molecules in our bodies.

    By the end of this chapter, you will be able to explain the function and structure of the digestive system. You will also be able to describe the steps in the digestion process, from ingestion to elimination of waste. After going through the digestive process, you will learn about metabolism or the breakdown and building of molecules in your body. Finally, you will be able to describe injuries and diseases that affect the digestion process, justify dietary recommendations for chronic conditions, and compare and contrast food intolerance and food allergy.
