The world’s oldest known prescriptions were recorded on a clay tablet in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq), ca. 2400 BC. (Jerry H. Hodge School of Pharmacy, 2023). The poppy plant has been in use since 3400 BC as opium, which is a powerful narcotic and pain reliever (DEA Museum, n.d.). Many herbs used by Indigenous Americans have led to the development of many modern drugs. One statistic says that “more than 120 drugs prescribed by physicians today were first made from plant extracts, and 75 percent of these were derived from examining plants used in traditional indigenous medicine” (Keoke & Porterfield, 2003, as cited in Smith, 2017).
In more modern history, Apothecary shops were established during the 1700s in Philadelphia. Despite an attempt to provide a centralized location to treat patients, there was no oversight, and drug safety was not regulated. (Center for the History of Medicine, n.d.). Federal regulation of drugs emerged as early as 1848 under a law that addressed only imported drugs. In 1905, the American Medical Association launched a private, voluntary means of controlling a substantial part of the drug marketplace, a system that remained in place for over a half-century. FDA drug regulations have evolved considerably since President Theodore Roosevelt signed the 1906 Pure Food and Drugs Act. (U. S. Food and Drug Administration, 2018c). Today, the FDA is responsible for protecting public health by utilizing oversight systems that assure drug safety, efficacy, and security (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, n.d.).
