The liver, kidneys, lungs, and gastrointestinal system all decline in function as we age. This means that most older people cannot absorb, metabolize, or excrete medications as well as they could when they were younger. Therefore, the Medical Assistant needs to be aware that older patients may require smaller amounts of medications to be effective and safe.
The Therapeutic Research Center publishes a list of medications that are potentially harmful for patients over the age of 65 years. Many providers reference The Beers List when prescribing for their elderly patients (Therapeutic Research Center, 2019).
