Patient education is an important task for the Medical Assistant. When a patient receives a new prescription, the MA should educate the patient regarding the name of the drug, the intended action of the drug, side effects and adverse effects of the drug, how the drug is supplied (tablets, liquids, etc.), how often the patient should take the drug, and any other important information. To do this, the MA should be familiar with common medical abbreviations.
