It is characterized by developing small, red sores or blisters that can rupture and form honey-colored crusts. Impetigo is typically caused by bacteria, most commonly Streptococcus pyogenes (group A Streptococcus) and Staphylococcus aureus, that can enter the skin through cuts, scratches, insect bites, or other skin protective barrier breaks. These bacteria can spread from person to person through direct contact, such as touching the infected skin or sharing contaminated items like towels or clothing.
The signs and symptoms of impetigo can vary but often include small, red sores or blisters that quickly rupture and ooze fluid, the formation of honey-colored, crusty scabs over the sores, itching, and discomfort in the affected areas, and swollen lymph nodes in severe cases or if the infection becomes systemic. Impetigo is usually diagnosed based on its characteristic appearance and clinical symptoms. Treatment for impetigo typically involves antibiotic therapy and good hygiene practices to prevent the infection from spreading. Mild cases of impetigo may be treated with topical antibiotic creams or ointments. In more severe or widespread cases, oral antibiotics may be prescribed to eliminate bacterial infection. Proper hygiene practices are essential to prevent the spread of impetigo. Individuals with impetigo should avoid close contact with others, especially young children and individuals with weakened immune systems, until the sores are no longer contagious (usually 24–48 hours after starting antibiotics).
