These infections are caused by several types of fungi that thrive in warm, moist environments. Fungal skin infections are typically not serious but can be uncomfortable and unsightly. The symptoms of fungal skin infections may include itching, burning, stinging sensations, redness, inflammation, scaling or peeling skin, raised circular or oval-shaped rashes, blisters, and pustules. Treatment for fungal skin infections typically involves antifungal medications, which can be applied topically or taken orally. The following describes several types of fungal infections.
Tinea corporis (ringworm) is a circular, red, and itchy rash that often has a raised border. It can occur on various body parts and is not caused by a worm but by a fungal infection.
Tinea pedis (athlete's foot) affects the feet, particularly between the toes. It can cause itching, burning, peeling skin, and sometimes blisters.
Tinea cruris (jock itch) primarily affects the groin area, inner thighs, and buttocks. It often presents as a red, itchy rash with a raised edge.
Tinea versicolor results in discolored patches on the skin, usually on the chest, back, or shoulders. These patches may be lighter or darker than the surrounding skin and can be more noticeable after sun exposure.
Tinea capitis is a fungal infection of the scalp and hair. It can cause hair loss, scaling, and sometimes swollen lymph nodes.
Onychomycosis is toenail or fingernail fungus. It can cause the nails to appear yellow, thick, and brittle (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018).
