    Antigens are molecules on the surface of pathogens that trigger an immune response. B cells produce antibodies, proteins that bind specifically to antigens, marking the pathogens for destruction by immune cells. Antibodies come in various classes (IgG, IgM, IgA, IgD, and IgE) and have different functions, such as neutralizing pathogens, activating immune cells, and complement activation. The thymus is responsible for the maturation of T cells, a critical component of adaptive immunity (Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care, 2020).
