This open educational resource project to support women's health education nationally and globally under the title "The Female Reproductive System and Women's Health Through a Multidisciplinary Lens." is created by a multidisciplinary team from CIMED and Knox College  https://medicine.illinois.edu/news/carle-illinois-led-team-advances-instruction-on-womens-health-issues-with-federal-funding. The contents of this resource, including the Textbook and 3D printed models, were developed under grant P116T210005 from the Open Textbook Pilot Program, Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE), U.S. Department of Education. Grant name: Illinois SCOERs (Support for the Creation of Open Education Resources), facilitated by the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI). However, those contents do not necessarily represent the policy of the U.S. Department of Education, and you should not assume endorsement by the Federal Government. The grant was awarded to Dr. Samar Hegazy, project PI

    Introduction

Welcome to “The Female Reproductive System and Women’s Health Through a Multidisciplinary Lens”. This Open Education Resrouce (OER) project began in 2023 as a collaboration of faculty from the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, Urbana Illinois, and Knox College, Galesburg Illinois.

Carle Illinois College of Medicine (CI MED) was founded in 2015 as the world’s first accredited engineering-based medical school and represents a new concept in the field of healthcare education. Innovation is the cornerstone of the curriculum, with emphasis on human factors, design thinking, medical technologies, and entrepreneurship.

Knox College was founded on a commitment to fairness and diversity from its beginning in 1837, and that commitment continues to the present. Knox College welcomes first generation students from all different backgrounds and ethnicities.

The goal of this Open Education Resource (OER) is to provide open learning opportunities related to the female reproductive system through the lens of science and humanities. The OER provides flexibility for various audience levels so that content that can be adapted for multiple learners, from undergraduate STEM students, to graduate students in health professions or social sciences, to medical students.

Learning units are enhanced with opportunities for 3D printing of anatomical models of normal female reproductive organs, embryonic models, pregnant uteri, and female reproductive organs with different abnormal pathologies. These models can be sued for both demonstration and hands-on simulation activities, and activities and materials can be adapted to a variety of levels of STEM courses.

    Chapters

Each chapter is comprised of multiple units that address aspects of the main topic. The chapter homepage provides overall learning objectives for the chapter.

    Chapter components may include:

    • Text (Open Access content and authors’ original)

    • Illustration Objects (Images, Diagrams, Videos)

    • 3D Models for 3D printing

    • Interactive Learning Activities

    • Assignments

    • Assessments

    • Glossary

    Text/Course Objectives

Students who complete this course will....

    • Learn biological structures & processes involved in female reproductive health, pregnancy and early human development

    • Describe and explain applications and societal implications of female reproductive health, and pregnancy related science outside of the classroom

    • Identify and compare gender constructions in female reproductive health and pregnancy related situations

    • Apply scientific investigative skills to answer questions related to female reproductive health, pregnancy and early human development issues

    Audience Levels

The visual scale below provides indicators of appropriate audience for chapter and unit content. Material may be easily adapted for more than one audience level.
