This chapter starts with providing the physiologic principles of the hormonal control of the ovarian and menstrual cycle. The normal histologic structures and functional histology of relevant parts of the female reproductive system are integrated with physiological principles. The rest of the chapter covers abnormalities of the menstrual cycle, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, and common pathological conditions affecting different parts of the female reproductive system and the breast.
The main physiologic function of the female reproductive system is to produce hormones and gametes, support the development of the fetus, and carry out the delivery process. For details about the macro anatomy of different parts of the female reproductive system, please refer to Chapter 1.
