The female athlete triad is a syndrome characterized by disordered eating that results in low energy availability, amenorrhoea/oligomenorrhoea, and decreased bone mineral density(osteoporosis and osteopenia) are present. Also called the Triad, it is commonly seen in females participating in sports that emphasize leanness or low body weight such as endurance running, gymnastics, ballet, swimming, diving, and figure skating. The syndrome can cause lifelong health consequences and potentially be fatal.
