In this chapter 10, we look at the nutrients important in energy metabolism and blood health, by first looking at blood and at metabolism, and then discussing the B vitamins, vitamin K, magnesium, iron, zinc, and other micronutrients. We also explore iron-deficient anemia and iron toxicity.
- 11.1: Chapter Introduction
- Many nutrients are involved in the hematopoietic system, which is a group of organs and tissues involved in producing cellular blood components.
- 11.2: Blood’s Function in the Body and in Metabolism Support
- Blood consists of many different types of cells, each with their own function.
- 11.3: Vitamins Important for Metabolism and for Blood Function and Renewal
- Folate, vitamin B12, and vitamin K are vitamins involved in producing blood cells and the clotting process.
- 11.4: Minerals Important for Blood Function and Renewal
- Several minerals play a critical role in blood formation and renewal.
- 11.5: Iron-Deficiency Anemia
- Anemia is a condition in which there is inadequate hemoglobin or RBC in blood to adequately deliver oxygen to the tissues. Iron deficiency causes one form of anemia.
