DiGiovanna is Professor of Biology - Emeritus, in the Richard A. Henson School of Science and Technology at Salisbury University. He received his B.S. degree in biology from St. John's University in New York and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Maryland College Park.
Since becoming a faculty member at SU in 1972, Dr. DiGiovanna's main teaching responsibilities have been in the areas of human biology including anatomy, physiology, pathology, embryology, and aging. In the 1980s, he was a Visiting Professor at the University of Maryland College Park during the summers. He was awarded SU's Distinguished Faculty Award (1995), the School of Science Excellence in Academic Advising award (1997), the Alumni Association Faculty Appreciation Award (2003), and the University of Maryland Board of Regents Faculty Award for teaching (2004). He retired as Professor of Biology-Emeritus.
Early in the 1980s, Dr. DiGiovanna developed an interest in the biology of aging, and he created a course in the Biology of Human Aging. Teaching this course prompted him to write the first edition of this book. He has been a member of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) and the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS). He also has been active in the Maryland Consortium for Gerontology in Higher Education and the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE).
