Interpreters must refrain from showing favoritism, offering advice, or letting personal beliefs shape their delivery.
Bias can be conveyed not only through words but also through tone, facial expressions, or body language. Interpreters must also disclose any potential conflict of interest, such as interpreting for relatives or close acquaintances. In such cases, withdrawal is recommended when possible to protect the integrity of the session.
Example: An interpreter who personally disagrees with a patient’s decision about treatment must still interpret faithfully and without judgment, ensuring that the patient and provider can communicate directly.
