(WHO. 2025). Occupational health workers aim to prevent physical and psychological illness on the job, as well as to prevent injuries. As you can see, this is quite a broad topic, and more than we can cover on one page. Here we will look at some connections between occupational health and environmental health. Later, in the chapter on injury prevention, we will take a closer look preventing injuries on the job.
Biological, chemical, and physical hazards on a job site can contribute to worker illness. Perhaps the most iconic example is black lung disease -- a disease common among coal miners who inhale coal dust and other minerals, greatly affecting their respiratory health and often shortening their lives.
The same principles of risk assessment for environmental health apply to risk assessment for occupational health -- it's just more focused on the workplace. Public health workers focused on occupational health would scan for dangers in the indoor air in the workplace, in the water (if relevant), and in exposures to hazardous waste or other dangerous substances.
The next two pages highlight some key occupational health policy to protect worker health -- improvements that were often won through the collective power of unions, as well as through public health action -- and a brief overview of common occupational illnesses and injuries.
