Transparency, Protocols (Professional Introduction), Prepping for an Encounter
This topic is packed!
EVERYTHING discussed is extremely important! Here are some main points.
There are three main standards of practice that interpreters must perform to
fulfill their responsibility for being transparent in an encounter.
- Interpreting EVERYTHING, while matching tone and register, whether it is impolite, rude, or it makes the interpreter uncomfortable.
- Ensuring everyone in the encounter knows who is speaking and whether the interpreter has intervened. For example, if the interpreter has to interrupt the communication between the patient and the provider to ask a speaker to repeat what they said or to clarify a term, the interpreter needs to make it clear that it is they who needs to ask a question and not one of the other participants.
- If the interpreter needs to intervene to ask for clarification, repetition, or any other reason, they MUST let both parties know what they have said. For example, if the interpreter needs to ask a patient to repeat what they said, they must also let the provider know that they asked the patient for repetition. Here's an example: The interpreter would say to the patient (speaker), "As the interpreter, I would like to ask you to repeat what you just shared." The interpreter would also need to tell the provider (listener). "The interpreter asked the patient for a repetition."
There is no accuracy without transparency!
