Chapter 5 — Learning Outcomes
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
• Describe the major interpreting modes used in healthcare
including consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation.
• Identify when each mode is appropriate in clinical settings
and explain how urgency, complexity, and interaction dynamics influence mode selection.
• Perform basic sight translation within the interpreter’s role boundaries
including when to decline a sight translation request for reasons of safety, legality, or complexity.
• Demonstrate strategies for safe summarization
and explain why summarization is rarely appropriate in healthcare and should only occur under exceptional circumstances.
• Strengthen memory skills essential for accurate interpreting
through chunking, visualization, sequencing, and other cognitive techniques used during consecutive interpreting.
• Apply basic note-taking techniques
that support accurate message transfer without attempting word-for-word transcription.
• Use paraphrasing to build message-transfer skills
and recognize how paraphrasing helps break habits of transcoding and supports meaning-based interpretation.

Realities for new healthcare interpreters:
- Early work is overwhelmingly in consecutive.
- Simultaneous assignments tend to be more technical and faster paced and often go to more experienced interpreters or teams.
-
Some regions with limited language coverage may place newer interpreters into simultaneous earlier.
Regardless, you are expected to develop both modes and to switch modes within an encounter when needed while maintaining quality.
