    Chapter 13 — Learning Outcomes

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

    • Explain the purpose of palliative and end-of-life care
Understand how comfort-focused, patient-centered care differs from curative treatment.

    • Describe the interpreter’s role in palliative, hospice, and end-of-life encounters
Maintain accuracy, neutrality, and compassion during emotionally sensitive communication.

    • Recognize cultural and family dynamics that influence end-of-life decisions
Interpret discussions involving spirituality, values, beliefs, and family roles with respect and clarity.

    • Interpret terminology related to pain and symptom management
Accurately convey descriptions of discomfort, treatment goals, and changes in care plans.

    • Support communication within multidisciplinary teams
Facilitate discussions among providers, families, and spiritual or psychosocial support staff while staying within role boundaries.

    Introduction

Palliative care is one of the most human-centered areas of medicine. It focuses not on curing disease, but on improving the quality of life for patients with serious or life-limiting illnesses. As medical interpreters, our work in these settings carries profound weight. We interpret words that comfort, clarify, and sometimes accompany patients and families through the most difficult moments of their lives.

This chapter will help you understand what palliative care is, how it differs from hospice, and what interpreters need to know to navigate the emotional, cultural, and ethical challenges of end-of-life conversations. You’ll also explore the team-based nature of this work, learn strategies for communication and self-care, and reflect on your comfort level in these deeply sensitive assignments.
