Obstetrics (OB) is the medical specialty focused on pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Obstetric encounters are emotionally charged, medically complex, and often culturally sensitive. Interpreters working in OB settings must navigate highly technical terminology alongside discussions of loss, risk, bodily autonomy, and family dynamics.

In the United States, obstetric care follows a structured pathway that includes routine prenatal visits, screening and diagnostic tests, labor and delivery services, and postpartum follow-up. Understanding how OB care is organized helps interpreters anticipate encounters and support accurate communication throughout pregnancy.

OB Care in the U.S. Healthcare System

Most patients enter obstetric care through one of the following pathways:

    • Referral from a primary care provider
    • Self-referral to an OB-GYN clinic
    • Referral following a positive pregnancy test

    Typical OB care includes:

    • Regular prenatal visits (increasing in frequency as pregnancy progresses)
    • Laboratory tests and imaging (blood work, ultrasounds, genetic screening)
    • Monitoring for pregnancy-related complications
    • Planned delivery in a hospital or birthing center
    • Postpartum follow-up after delivery

High-risk pregnancies may involve additional specialists such as maternal-fetal medicine (MFM), endocrinology, cardiology, or genetics.

📌 Interpreter context: OB visits often involve multiple providers, overlapping conversations, and rapid shifts between reassurance and urgency. Maintaining accuracy, tone, and emotional neutrality is critical.

    Key Pregnancy Concepts and Vocabulary

    Trimester
Pregnancy is divided into three trimesters, each with distinct assessments and risks.

    • First trimester: conception to 13 weeks
    • Second trimester: 14–27 weeks
    • Third trimester: 28 weeks to delivery

    Embryo vs. Fetus
    • Embryo: up to 8 weeks after fertilization
    • Fetus: from 8 weeks until birth

    Prenatal Care
Routine medical care during pregnancy aimed at monitoring maternal and fetal health, preventing complications, and providing education.
