After completing this unit, you should be able to:
- Define and describe the levels of structural organization of the human body—from atoms and molecules to the whole organism—including the basic characteristics of cells and the organ systems.
- Understand how photosynthesis is the pathway to glucose production and describe the relationship between photosynthesis in plants and energy metabolism in the human body.
- Identify and briefly describe the functions of the organs of the gastrointestinal tract, and discuss the five fundamental activities of digestion, giving an example of each.
- Describe several common disorders and discomforts of the GI tract, including their causes, symptoms, and approaches to treatment.
- Describe food intolerances, food allergies, and celiac disease, including the different causes, symptoms, and treatments for each condition.
- Explain the relationship between the gut microbiome, the immune system, and human health, and evaluate the current evidence linking microbiome composition to nutrition and disease, while recognizing the methodological limitations in microbiome research.
