1: Health Assessment in Nursing

    Systematic health assessments are performed regularly in nearly every health care setting. Nurses must learn to perform a complete health assessment as well assess each body system in order to determine appropriate nursing care for the patient.

    This section will explain the nursing process as standards of professional nursing practice to provide safe, patient-centered care.

    Nurses make decisions while providing patient care by using critical thinking and clinical reasoning.

    Regulations and standards of nursing assure safe, competent care is provided to the public.

    Nursing graduates must successfully pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) to receive a nursing license.

    Nurses must continually organize patient data to be recorded, either written or electronically. One model for organizing and prioritizing patient care needs is Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.
  • 1.7: Initial and Emergency Assessment
    The initial assessment is the first assessment the nurse will do when meeting a patient. An emergency assessment is done whenever a patient’s status has become, or is becoming, unstable.
  • 1.8: Focused Assessments
    Registered nurses do focused assessments in response to a specific patient health problem recognized by the nurse as needing further assessment of a body system or systems.
