Milk is a white liquid food that is produced by mammals through mammary glands. This liquid is produced for the primary purpose of feeding the offspring of the mother animal. However, for thousands of years animal milk has been a staple of the human diet and continues to offer nutrient benefits even in modern times. Milk contains 13 essential nutrients, of which 6 are considered "nutrients of concern" in the American diet. While cow's milk is the primary source of milk in the United States other sources of milk are consumed globally. Examples include camel, sheep, and goat.
