    • Describe the stages of the human lifespan.
    • Justify the dietary recommendations during pregnancy, infancy, youth, adult, and elderly stages of the human lifespan.
    • Compare community resources related to food insecurity for various stages of the human lifespan.
    • Describe common foodborne illnesses and identify sensitive populations for each.
    • List the requirements for safe food production, distribution, cooking, and storage.

    Our nutritional needs change as we develop from infancy to older age. Dietary recommendations for each stage in the human lifespan are based on these nutritional needs, and community nutrition programs have been developed to help individuals at each life stage accomplish a healthy diet. In this chapter, you will learn about specific nutritional considerations for pregnancy, infancy, youth, adult, and elderly life stages. Safe food practices will also be discussed because some life stages, such as infancy, may be more sensitive to common foodborne illnesses.
