These structures include the thymus gland, red bone marrow, spleen, lymph nodes, lymph vessels, other structures containing lymphatic tissues (tonsils, lining of the respiratory system and GI tract), and skin. These structures promote the development of the cells of this system and, together with blood and lymph, serve as the main repositories for them. Immune system cells include macrophages, Langerhans cells, and several types of lymphocytes. Special protein molecules called antibodies (see below) are also considered part of the immune system.
