    Planes and Sections

    Although the body seems to be symmetrical externally, it is certainly not the case internally. To understand the relative locations of internal organs in a three-dimensional body, it is necessary to study different body sections or planes. Imaging technology, e.g., computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) produce internal body images by scanning different sections of the body.

    The median or midsagittal section/plane is created by cutting along the midline of the body vertically, dividing the body into equal right and left halves. The vertical cut can also be off center which is called parasagittal section. A parasagittal section results in unequal left and right halves.

    The frontal or coronal section/plane divides the body into a front and back portion. 

    The transverse, cross-sectional, or horizontal section/plane is created by cutting horizontally across the body. The transverse section creates a bottom and a top half. These halfs may be unequal depending on where the section is made.
