The body has two main cavities (Figure \(\PageIndex{1}\)): the dorsal cavity and the ventral cavity.
Dorsal Cavity
The dorsal cavity is subdivided into the cranial and spinal cavities. The cranial cavity is within the skull and houses the brain. The spinal cavity is within the vertebral column and contains the spinal cord. The brain is continuous with the spinal cord, as the cranial cavity extends into the spinal cavity.
Ventral Cavity
Like the dorsal cavity, the ventral cavity is also subdivided. The muscular breathing muscle, the diaphragm, physically separates the superior thoracic cavity from the inferior abdominopelvic cavity. The bony ribs in the thoracic cavity protect vital organs like the heart and the lungs. Within the thoracic cavity, the pleural cavity surrounds and protects the lungs. The pericardial cavity cavity surrounds and protects the heart. The mediastinum refers to a space in the chest that contains the heart and portions of the respiratory tract.
The abdominopelvic cavity is actually two cavities with no actual divider in between. The superior abdominal cavity is formed by layers of abdominal muscles and houses the majority of the digestive organs while the inferior pelvic cavity is framed by the pelvic bones and contains the bladder, rectum, and reproductive organs.
