Microscope Components
The microscope has many components which allow the user to observe microscopic specimens. Study Table 1 and Figure \(\PageIndex{1}\) and Figure \(\PageIndex{2}\) carefully to understand what the function of each component is and its location on the microscope.
| Name of component | Function |
Binocular portion |
Adjusts the distance between the eyepieces. |
Coarse focusing adjustment |
Adjusts stage height and brings the specimen in focus when the SCANNING OBJECTIVE is used. |
Brightness adjustment knob |
Controls the amount of light from the light source. |
Condenser |
Directs light through the specimen (can be raised and lowered with condenser knob). |
Eyepieces – 10X (ocular lenses) |
Magnify ten times, diopter adjustment ring provides clear focus with both lenses. |
Fine focusing adjustment |
Used for precise focus when LOW and HIGH POWER OBJECTIVES are used. |
Iris diaphragm |
Controls the amount of light through the condenser by moving the aperture diaphragm lever. |
Main switch |
Turns light on or off. |
Microscope frame |
Base to support the microscope. |
Objectives |
Scanning - red (4x), low power - yellow (10x), high power - blue (40x). |
Revolving nosepiece |
Holds objectives. |
Specimen holder |
Secures the slide on stage. |
Specimen holder feed knob (x-axis/y-axis) |
Moves the slide and stage in X- and Y-axes. |
Stage |
Square platform which holds the slide. |

Figure \(\PageIndex{2}\) More components of the compound light microscope: The condenser is found underneath the stage. The coarse and fine focusing knobs are found on both sides of the microscope. The on/off switch is found on the left side of the microscope when viewing it from the front. (Image by Harmony Folse, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0)
