The term flexibility is an interesting one. The dictionary definition is “the capability to bend easily without breaking”. Socially speaking, a flexible person will be open to suggestions or not have a strong opinion and is easy to get along with. In exercise physiology, it describes the range of motion someone has in a given joint. Being flexible is important for many sports such as gymnastics, diving, or even wrestling. Someone should be flexible enough in a joint to maintain proper biomechanics during a movement. Being flexible may be a disadvantage if it compromises the strength or power of an athlete.

There are three main areas where flexibility is commonly measured- upper body chain, torso, and lower body chain. The shoulder, chest, and elbow areas which represent the upper body chain. The lower back, hips, back of knee (hamstrings) which represent the lower chain, and the thoracic movement in the transverse plane is sometimes measured as well, and this is representative of core flexibility.

This manual will use the back scratch, the sit and reach (seated or sitting on the ground), and the torso turn tests to measure flexibility in those key areas just mentioned, respectively.
