    Learning Objectives

Utilize the "Food and Feelings Journal" to learn about your own eating patterns.

Many people who try traditional food journaling — tracking food, calorie, and macronutrient intake — report that they feel guilty and even more confused about food and their body than they did before starting the journal. This happens for a number of reasons, but most importantly, it’s because the journal continually reinforces a message of failure.

Instead, you can try a "Food and Feelings Journal" (1).

The objective of this activity is to focus on how eating foods make a person feel afterward, rather than tracking Calories or nutrients. Using the table below, track a few days of eating - without numbers! Then look back and see if any patterns emerge. Do you eat alone a lot? If you feel you eat too much/binge at night do you notice that you haven't eaten much earlier in the day that might satisfy your hunger? What do you notice?

What actions can you consider taking after completing the Food and Feelings Journal analysis?

    Time/who you are with/

    where you are

    Thoughts/Feelings/Hunger level

    before eating

    What you ate

    Thoughts/Feelings/Hunger level

    after eating
